A Statement from the Kentucky Division Executive Council
Memorandum for: Lt CiC Anthony Hodges, Sons of Confederate Veterans
Subject: Position statement of The Kentucky Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans
24 February 2005
The Executive Council of the Kentucky Division has watched closely, over the past week, the actions of members of the GEC.
We have read carefully the responses of many Camps, Brigades, Divisions and Armies within the Confederation to those actions.
We have read and tried to understand the statement you released, attempting to justify the actions the group with which you are
associated has taken. We have tried honestly to keep the camps and the general membership of the Kentucky Division informed
concerning these developments, and we have polled every Camp concerning an appropriate response on our part.
We have spoken with the Commander of the AOT, to which we are assigned and the leadership of other Divisions within
the AOT. We have also corresponded with our own JAG and the legitimate JAG of the SCV. We have discussed the situation with
one another, and we have arrived at the position statement, below. We hereby publish this position to the other members of the
Confederation, and to the public at large.
We, the Officers and men of the Kentucky Division, SCV, stand with our brothers in Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia,
Tennessee, Louisiana – indeed across the whole Southland and those Divisions beyond its geographic confines-- to condemn and
denounce the attempt by certain members of the General Executive Council of our organization to usurp the constitutionally
elected leadership of the organization for whatever purposes they may have thought they had for so doing.
Furthermore,we
deplore the actions of certain members of the GEC in bringing suit in a court of law against our constitutionally elected
leadership, even if purporting to act on behalf of the organization. In fact, we do not believe that they had legitimate
constitutional sanction for their actions. If they continue to believe that they have legitimate cause for appeal of actions
taken by the elected leadership of our organization, then we believe that the appropriate remedy would be to bring it before
the elected membership in convention assembled, as provided for in our Constitution.
We reject the claims to leadership made
by those persons appointed by the junta that brought the suit in an ongoing attempt to overthrow our elected leadership, and
we call upon those persons so appointed to resign all such offices immediately; we call upon those members of the GEC who
participated in this travesty to resign from the GEC immediately; and we call upon the remaining members of the GEC to place
this entire affair before the membership at the 2005 Reunion for appropriate resolution.
The Kentucky Division does not acknowledge the junta of the GEC or it’s appointed officers as having any authority whatsoever. We will continue to recognize and support our elected CiC and the officers he has appointed in accordance with our Constitution.
Signed: Thomas Y. Hiter, Ph.D, Commander
Tommy Rector, Lt Commander
Basil D. Childress, Adjutant
Curt Carter, Central Brigade Commander
Don Poynter, Eastern Brigade Commander
Fred Wilhite, Western Brigade Commander
William A. Lyons, Past Division Commander
